Hope. Hope keeps the world turning. Even in the face of dire circumstances, it’s hope that keeps us together and the fire inside us churning.

No one expects cancer. When it strikes, it strikes hard and turns entire lives and worlds upside down. Cancer doesn’t see race, income level, or timing. It doesn’t discriminate - it simply attacks. 

Over a decade ago, my grandmother lost her fight with MDS (Myelodysplastic syndrome). Advanced treatment options were few, let alone inaccessible in India. The only viable treatment option was a stem cell transplant, which she became too weak to endure. But it was hope that she would get better, hope that a miracle would happen, that kept her alive a year longer than doctors anticipated. Our time with her was cut short and her passing made a void that was hard to fill. I am left with enduring memories of her childlike enthusiasm and spirited nature. 

Unfortunately, our family’s tussle with blood cancer wasn’t quite over just yet. It snuck up on us again a couple years ago when my mom was suddenly diagnosed with CML (Chronic Myeloid Leukemia). Our lives were turned upside down once again as we struggled to come to terms with our new normal. Her cancer was detected early and I feel incredibly grateful that treatment options were available to eventually bring her in remission. Even in two decades, targeted immunotherapies have advanced immensely. 

Since her remission earlier last year, my mom and I have been involved in volunteering with LLS to help patients, caregivers, and families like ours. As I’m sure you can imagine, this project is extremely close to my heart. I am passionate about making a difference and bringing hope to families.
